Green Chair Royalty was painted a few years back, inspired by a chair I spotted in a restaurant—one that looked regal, almost throne-like. But really, this painting is an inside joke about my dad.
Growing up, my dad always had his chair—the one sacred spot in the house that no one else could sit in, not even the grandkids. It became a running family joke, especially as he upgraded to a new “favorite” chair every time they moved. I think he went through four of them!
When I saw that chair at the restaurant, I knew it was perfect for this painting. It felt like a humorous tribute to the unwritten rule of my childhood: Dad’s chair is off-limits.
I still have one of his favorites—the one he gave me when I moved out.
