Beyond the Surface: Assumptions Unveiled is an interactive exhibition exploring the assumptions we make based on appearance. The series features 8 large-scale oil portraits paired with 8 framed personal objects, creating 16 pieces total. Each subject shared the story behind an object meaningful to them, challenging viewers to reconsider first impressions and stereotypes.

The portraits celebrate the complexity and diversity of human identity across gender, age, race, ethnicity, and lived experience. Viewers are invited to participate in an “Assumption Challenge” by scanning a QR code and matching each object to its portrait. After submitting their responses, they immediately see the correct matches, revealing how often assumptions can be inaccurate. The collected responses become part of the exhibition itself.

Inspired by my own experiences with gender-based assumptions, this series encourages empathy, reflection, and conversation. I want viewers to recognize how often our assumptions about others are incorrect and to look beyond appearances and stereotypes. Ultimately, the exhibition highlights that people cannot be reduced to society’s expectations, but are instead unique individuals with layered personal stories.
